Return without opening a map

Return Compass

  • Hollow Map Plus now includes a Return Compass for saved places.
  • Open the Compass action from an expanded place card to follow live distance and direction back to the saved destination.
  • The compass is useful when you want a simple way back without immediately opening Apple Maps, Google Maps, or another map app.
  • If the direction is not stable yet, walk a few steps: distance is already live and the direction improves as the phone gets a better movement signal.

Clearer place actions

  • Expanded place cards now separate Share, Compass, and Navigate Back actions.
  • Navigate Back remains free and still opens your preferred map app.
  • Share still uses a Hollow Map web link, so the recipient opens a map-agnostic place page instead of a provider-specific link.

What’s New

  • Credits now include a What’s New screen.
  • Release notes are loaded from hollowmap.com and rendered natively in the app.
  • This makes future updates easier to explain without changing the app interface each time.

A stronger first store release

Core experience

  • Saving a place stays fast: record your current GPS position, name it clearly, and return to it later.
  • Saved places can include notes and photos so you remember the right car park, tent, meeting point, travel spot, or temporary location.
  • The main screen is easier to scan, with clearer actions on each saved place and a more visible path to create a new one.

Find places faster

  • Search now focuses on meaningful matches instead of returning too many unrelated saved places.
  • Photo filters help you quickly separate places with images from places without images.
  • Distance indicators and closest-place sorting help you understand which saved place is nearest when Plus is active.
  • Date filters make it easier to narrow the list to places saved today, this week, this month, or earlier.

Hollow Map Plus

  • Plus keeps important places easier to find by pinning favorites to the top.
  • The important-places filter helps reduce long lists when you only want your key spots.
  • Custom categories are available with Plus, including category creation, category badges on locations, and category filtering.
  • The Return Compass adds a map-free way to follow distance and direction back to a saved place.

Sharing and settings

  • Saved places can be shared through a Hollow Map web link instead of a direct map-provider link.
  • Preferences are better organized, with clearer sections for display, access, support, about, and developer tools.
  • The app language can now be selected from preferences, independently of the device language.
  • Feedback and app rating entries are available from preferences.

Store readiness

  • Permission flows were cleaned up so location, camera, and photo access are requested only when a feature needs them.
  • The Plus purchase flow is connected to RevenueCat and uses the hosted paywall when available.
  • The app includes a refreshed visual identity, updated icon direction, and a cleaner dark/light theme.
  • This What’s New page is now content-driven from hollowmap.com so future release notes can be updated without changing the app UI.
